#i absolutely love this tiny trashy little sam raimi southern gothic movie  #it’s not like groundbreaking or oscar winning  #but blanchett is blanchett ya know?  #and it’s in the top 3 keanu performances  #and it it’s an absolute master-class in ‘show don’t tell’  #over half the key emotional point and narrative devices are just visual/auditory an not explained  #with a 'well you see timmy this means this’  #you just have blanchett looking at 'meaningless’ ESP card shapes  #and you go yeah ok i get that  #and you have her space out and see things that are there but not there  #but it’s not explained!  #sometimes they’re nice and sometimes they’re nasty but the meaning is rarely if ever spoon-fed to you  #it leans into things you know by feeling rather than by thinking in a way that visual media can  #also it’s a tiny trashy little sam raimi southern gothic movie  #so that’s a fun concept all on it’s own tbh
